The developers who were giving the demo confirmed that they feel like they've delivered "the most badass single player" possible with Rage, which is a "meaty offering on its own." What they wanted with Rage's online functionality was something different that fit within the confines of "what's right for Rage." Rage Combat Rally contains a series of sub-modes, including Team Rally, Chain Rally and Vehicle Deathmatch. The demo of Rage Combat Rally I was given last week in Utah impressed me not only because of how fun it looked, but because of the deeper reasoning behind giving gamers something so unexpected. Vehicular combat! Are you surprised? You no doubt should be. And more surprising yet, Rage Combat Rally only accommodates up to six players at a time in an era where most shooters try to allow for as many players as possible. Instead, Rage Combat Rally allows gamers to drive heavily-armed buggies in violent vehicular combat. That's right – Rage's online functionality doesn't involve on-foot modes at all. Rather, the focus is on modes that, as the developers themselves say, give gamers an experience that's "uniquely Rage." Rage's competitive online features revolve around a series of modes under the umbrella of Rage Combat Rally. More traditional modes like the aforementioned deathmatch don't appear in Rage. ![]() With its upcoming first-person shooter Rage, id Software is trying something different.
